Synopsis: On a world without superheroes, five troublemakers discover they're pawns of a worldwide conspiracy.

The back cover blurb tells us:

"Five extraordinary people seemingly with nothing in common share the bond of surviving a cataclysmic event.  In a world devoid of superheroes, they will come together and discover that all they know has been a lie that the world we live in is not the one we believe it to be.  To survive they must unite and face the true evils of our universe.  It's a world where literally anything can happen, and probably will as if living on borrowed time wasn't enough!"

If by saying the characters are"extraordinary", they mean "major pains in the ass", we'll agree.  "Everything is a lie" is true enough, when you learn it isn't presidents and activists running the world, but rather greedy billionaires.  Whether these contrary gripers and whiners ever "unite" is also questionable.

The blurb goes on to cite how Howard Chaykin, "acclaimed for his groundbreaking series AMERICAN FLAGG  and for redefining both BLACKHAWK and THE SHADOW, brings his sense of style and electrifying panache to one of DC's classic concepts!"

Well  FLAGG was different but fizzled.  Fans hated the new Blackhawk and Shadow, and both tanked.  And this is hardly a "DC classic" since it's totally unrelated to the original Challs.

The book offers no extras.  The title page art and incidental graphics are all cribbed from interior panels.  The cover is from the original ad.  The six issue covers are stacked at the back.  There's no introduction or foreword or other clue from the author or editor.

Comments

Well, that's why they call it "hype".

It's a tough call as to whether this book is useful. You find trade paperbacks in libraries and bookstores that don't carry comic books, so it exposes SOME Challengers to a wider audience. Then again, we don't want anyone to think these are the REAL Challengers.

Below is an interior page first solicited as the new cover. DC probably reconsidered when they saw the "heroes" bloody, dazed, and confused. Better to go with the sneers.
