Cosmo is - or was - the Challengers' mascot. The team found Cosmo when they investigated a space capsule that plunked down in the ocean. Turns out was an alien capsule containing an alien animal. Since he came from space, the Challs named him Cosmo. ("The Menace of Mystery Island, COTU 18.) Cosmo - who looks like an orange raccoon - has super powers. He can levitate people with rays from his paws. He can sniff out distant trails. He's a handy dude. Cosmo helps land a criminal. ("The Challengers' Space-Pet Ally, COTU 21.) Cosmo rescues the Challengers from an alien hunter. ("Captives of the Alien Hunter, COTU 25.) Things look bad when Cosmo acts bonky. But he's only excited to see his old master, an alien named D'Jann. Turns out Cosmo's real name is J'Suna. He helps the Challs straighten out his master and cage some criminals. In the ends, D'Jann lets the Challs keep Cosmo to continue their good works. ("Cosmo Turns Traitor, COTU 32.) Cosmo finally and officially belongs to the Challengers. |
Except the little guy is never seen or mentioned again. Where'd he go? Fan questions in letters columns brought these answers from the editors. COTU 45: Where's Cosmo? "June and Cosmo may return in future stories." COTU 50: When will you resurrect Cosmo? "Dunno, unless we can figure out how to get him into one of their adventures." COTU 63: Cosmo? "Somewhere out in space, so far as we know." |
Cosmo's disappearance from the stories was never fully explained. The last clue - "somewhere out in space" - makes us wonder if the Challengers didn't relent and return Cosmo to his owner. After all, he WAS an alien creature. They couldn't know how to care for their pet. Cosmo really would be better off with a knowledgeable master in an familiar environment. So we'll assume Cosmo is "somewhere out in space" with his original master. |
