The Challengers' entry in the DC Comics Encyclopedia is concise but comprehensive.

It encapsulates the first team's origin as a "Hero Team" and their battles with "scoundrels" throughout the world, time, and space. Significantly, it calls them "adventurers-for-hire," putting them in a paramilitary or hazardous work class (like the Blackhawks or Sea Devils). It touches on how Prof shattered the mountain (leaving out Duncan Pramble's bomb) so the survivors thought Prof and June dead and "learned new skills in their absence". Thus Ace is not only a top pilot but an "amateur sorceror". The entry cites how some Challs disappeared into statis, and how Rocky licensed the name to a new group. It ends with their adventure in Hypertime battling Black Zero, with the subsequent loss of Red and June Robbins, but the gain of June Walker.

The encyclopedia lists current members as Prof Haley, Red Ryan, June Robbins, Rocky Davis ("Wrestling champion and top strategist"), Ace Morgan, Clay Brody, Marlon Corbet, Kenn Kawa, Brenda Ruskin, AND June Walker ("Hypertime duplicate of June Robbins from an alternate timeline").

One quick quote sums up the Challs well. "ORIGINALS. The Challs were a link between the Golden Age mystery men and the superheroes of the modern age."
