Like everyone else, the Challengers are overwhelmed by the Crisis on Inifinite Earths. They learn about the menace along with everyone else, then work to understand "subspace readings" for Superman and other investigators, then journey to Peru to help Cave Carson check out weather anomolies and subterranean energy readings. They're in Peru when the heavy hitters save the universe, but not the multiverse. (Crisis on Infinite Earths 5, 8, 11, 12 and Legends of the DC Universe: Crisis on Infinite Earths 1) On one happy note amid disaster, Ace Morgan meets his long-lost brother, Travis Morgan, the Warlord of Skartaris, and his cousin Oliver (Green Arrow) Queen. (Not recorded, but all three were present at briefings.) |
Occasionally, the Challs dust off the white-piped alpha uniforms and add white dickies, much like military police, for a snappier look. ![]() In St. Louis, the Challs talk a terrified man off a ledge - momentarily. When he sees a mysterious card, "Jumpy Mister Jenkins" flings himself out the window to his death. (Originally slated for Adventure 498, then bumped, this story was resurrected in DC Comics Presents 84.) The card has a Kryptonian letter, so the Challs go see "the only Kryptonian we know." Arriving in Metropolis, the boys run into a roadblock - the Daily Planet receptionist! Clark Kent summons Superman. Too bad - because our guys are mind-enslaved by the card! It belongs to Zo-Mar, a refugee criminal from Krypton who roars, "Give Me Power ... Give Me Your World!". (DC Presents 84.) After a lot of destruction, our heroes finally stick Zo-Mar in the Phantom Zone. The Jenkins curse returns when Rocky gets a similar death-card in the mail. A woman who urges Rocky to "Dream a Little Dream..." turns into a monster to kill Rocky! The other Challengers burst in and rescue him. (Plotted but never written for Adventure 499.) Rocky finds something in common with Mister Jenkins, the jumper: they were both on the same Board of Directors. A cadre of "Money-Mad Magicians, Inc." are killing board members to take over. The Challengers fix their hash. (Plotted but never written for Adventure 500 and 501.) |
Waiting to appear on the TV show "Real Incredible People", the Challengers kill time telling June their origin. They're just explaining about Morelian's magic box when they walk on stage - and see the very box, a surprise from the producers. The Challs thought it destroyed! They rush the dangerous box to the same remote Pacific Island. This time June draws the short straw. Opening the fourth drawer, they discover an ancient wizard who's been living inside for 300 years! Immortal, as long as he stays in the box. The Challs leave him in peace (SO 12). The Challengers make the most of eight glorious years adventuring. Then their borrowed time runs out... |
