JLA 42 second cover

The current Justice League chases villains and alien artifacts.  They’re not sure why.  But the artifacts have a long history...

In an earlier issue, circa 1777, we saw Tomahawk’s Rangers find British redcoats slaughtered.  Unearthed was a weird metal object.  Tomahawk touched it and went berserk, suffering fearsome hallucinations…

Fast-forward to the 20th Century.  In their yellow uniforms, somewhere in the mountains, the Challengers stand “winners” over Kra, Multi-Man, and Volcano Man.
Prof notes in his journal that, “We did it!”  Defeated the “League of Challenger Haters” again.

“But, if I’ve learned anything, when you challenge the unknown… the unknown has a bad habit of becoming the unexpected.”

Then, “a strange  addendum”.  The brawl had uncovered an exotic device.  “Alien maybe.  Like nothing I’ve ever seen.”  (And considering the Challs’ career, that’s pretty weird.)

“Ace touched it… and changed.”

Ace Morgan goes nuts from an alien artifact

Ace goes nuts.  “GrrAhhh!”  His buddies grab him, but can barely contain him.  “It took three hours to stop him.  Two more before his madness ebbed.”  (The audience knows he probably hallucinated, same as Tomahawk.)

Even Challengers need help sometime.  They call in Doc Magnus and his Metal Men.  The robots haul away the villains to jail.  And, unaffected by madness, pick up the artifact.

Challengers of the Unknown get help from the Metal Men

Doc is glad to help.  His robots have been a little stir-crazy lately.  And whether robots can feel emotion is becoming his “life’s work”.

As for the device, Doc knows a “research facility.  New, but already doing great things…”

Challenger Rocky Davis and Doc Will Magnus

And that’s the last the Challs see of the infernal device.

The facility is STAR Labs.  In the present (as seen earlier), Darwin Jones examined the piece and – like Tomahawk and Ace – almost fried his brain.

The artifacts’ diabolical purpose is yet to be determined…

Comments

Interesting to see an "addendum" to a brawl, a nice real-life image.  And that we missed the brawl itself.  And that Ace moved right in, as usual, and touched something unknown and got zapped for it.  Terrific to see the Challs finally meet up with the Metal Men!
