June's Appearances and History
|

Too QuietWhen next we see June, things have quieted down - too much. Whether they know it or not, the Challengers are in semi-retirement. Challenger Mountain is a tourist attraction. Rocky drinks too much. Ace explores religion. Red yearns for action and destroys punching bags. June works with Prof, and the two have become close. Natural, considering they're both brains. Prof has searched for years for sources of alternate energy to benefit mankind. They experiment with electromagnetic fields, geothermics, even space warps. Prof and June think they've found a source in deep space. To tap or not to tap? The team votes to pull the lever - just as a hidden bomb goes off deep in the mountain. (COTU V2 1.) Challenger Mountain explodes. Ace and Red and Rocky are buried in rubble but survive. Only to find Prof and June are vaporized (so they think) and Challengerville is leveled. The surviving Challs are arrested, tried, and ordered to disband. They do, and an era ends. |
Prof and June, meanwhile, are - someplace strange. They land on a planet of sentient lizards. They guess it's another dimension. Stuck, they make a home and stick for five years. (Flashback in COTU V3 8.) |

Yet both Prof and June never stop trying to contact their friends. Both somehow manage several times to send scrambled signals to Ace, Red, and Rocky. (COTU V2 2.) Once the three "survivors" step through a portal and find themselves in a tiny house where - it appears - Prof and June have retired from the world. June looks pregnant and Prof old, yet both are ethereal. They talk to their friends who then pass on. Yet the three lost lambs are hopeful. (COTU V2 7.) |
Well they should be. Under the Mojave Desert, a scheming scientist named Dr. Carcosa throws a switch for a Tesla field - and Prof and June rematerialize! Even Carcosa is amazed and orders both killed. Prof sends a signal on the Challengers' secret frequency, then he and June dash into the desert. They meet their old friends, but the reunion is short-lived. Carcosa throws another switch and all but Rocky are zapped out of existence. (Flashback in COTU V3 8.) Carcosa's experiments continue, and before long, the original Challs are plucked out of limbo and reunited. (COTU V3 7.) |

The old team barely has time to meet the young Challs before they must again march into a Tesla field to shut down a runaway reactor. (COTU V3 8.) Only Rocky is left behind, wounded. Where in the World Is June Robbins-Walker?The reduced team - Ace, Red, Prof, and June - shut down the reactor and save a good portion of Earth. They've landed somewhere in Hypertime on a world ruled by Black Zero. Undaunted at being lost across infinite worlds, the Challengers wage a guerrilla war against Black Zero and his minions. |

When Superboy turns up, BZ goes down in flames. (Superboy 60-65.) All that's left is to fly THROUGH Hypertime back to their original Earth. The trip is rough and Black Zero tears open the Hypership. Red and June spill out. Superboy dives, misses Red, and plucks June out of the maelstrom. |
Which June is June? The Hypership crashes in Metropolis - home at last! (Superboy 65.) Except. Red is missing. And Superboy snatched the wrong June. THIS June is - Ta Da! - June WALKER, not June ROBBINS.
She's the June who officially joined the team after "the giant robot thing". She's been an official member ever since, not a "honorary girl member" or a "mascot". (Superboy 65.) |
So where's June Robbins? Lost in Hypertime with Red. NOW what? Nothing for it but to go BACK into Hypertime and rescue both. (Superboy 65.)
And there we last saw our Junes. |
