Silver Age: Challengers of the Unknown 1 Continues...

In the Time Pool, the Challs see (possible? probable?) future versions of themselves. Red with an eyepatch. Older Challs in sloppy civvies. Salt-and-pepper Challs in new uniforms, except Red is a blur (lost in Hypertime). What's it all mean?..

They don't know...

And then they're plucked from the Time Pool by Chronos/Atom.

Yet a brilliant flash of time shows a tantalizing secret - nine NEW superheroes!

WHO are they?

Chronos/Atom restores the Challs to normal size. Back to the original question: Does the Atom still want to visit the past? No, somehow he thinks it's unnecessary. The Challs agree. Red says, "All those heroes... I gotthis feeling - They're gonna fix this whole thing!"

But who are they? Unknown... Then it's up the Challs to find them!

They're off to scour the planet. "Time's running out!" Prof adds a Challenger rallying cry, "It always is! The trick is making every second count!"

END

The bombastic blurbs from companion mags:

The Challs' only other appearance in the Silver Age epic (in SILVER AGE 80-PAGE GIANT) has them scouring the world for the "union-suiters" glimpsed in the Time Pool. This turns out to be a wild goose chase. Because...

... Well, you'll just have to read the Silver Age maxiseries and find out!

The story begins in SILVER AGE 1 and ends in SILVER AGE 80-PAGE GIANT. In between are terrific one-shot issues of Silver Age Doom Patrol, Teen Titans, Showcase starring a new Seven Soldiers of Victory : Adam Strange, Batgirl, Blackhawk, and others, Flash, Green Lantern, Brave & the Bold starring Batman and the Metal Men, Dial H for HERO, and Justice League. Plus there's a Silver Age Secret Files & Origins with a wonderful Challs profile / pinup page. And of course the fantabulous Silver Age Challengers of the Unknown 1!

Comment

For one brief summer in the new millenium, the Silver Age was alive and well. New-old faces, old problems with a new spin - and the most clever rabbit-out-of-a-hat solution that knocks the bad guys clear out of the ring! Kudos to Mark Waid for a stunning plot. And thanks to all who contributed, especially Karl Kesel, who got the Challs back on the rack in their own book!
